How I found botanicals.

For the first time in my life, my body was erupting all over. I had skin, digestive, and even sinus problems - all at once! How could this have happened? It’s true, I was on overload from work and, on top of that, I was planning my wedding, which is stressful for all brides-to-be. So I was at my wits end.

I had a severe rash on my inner thigh and even acne on the back of my arms– not mention the fact that I was running to the bathroom after every meal.

I was desperate to find a solution and cure to all these seemingly unrelated ailments, so I went straight to my doctor, who could not find a solid medical reason for any of my symptoms. So naturally, he prescribed antibiotics, which, unfortunately, often happens when traditional medical practitioners cannot find a solution.

He also suggested I see a dermatologist, who simply gave me some cream for the rash. The end result was that none of my symptoms went away. This could not be the endgame.

I realized that maybe Conventional Medicine was not the answer. I decided to search out an alternative, more natural solution.

Ayurveda

Living in NYC, everything is at your fingertips.  I searched for an alternative doctor and met with an Ayurvedic doctor the next day.  She offered me a warming tea; explained Ayurveda and suggested I eat warm vegetables in the afternoon.  The Vata dosha likes warm, cooked foods and so I began to shift my diet.  The next day I ate three pieces of gluten toast.  It left me wondering.. what was in that tea she gave me?

Herbal Medicine

Still searching for answers, I took my first herbal class: “Alternative to antibiotics” in 2009 with Robin Rose Bennett at the Open Center in NYC, and it was, without exaggeration, life-changing. I learned how to heal my chronic sinus infection with Yarrow and Elderflower tea. I ate raw garlic on toast whenever I felt a sinus infection coming on and sipped on Echinacea tinctures all day. And even though my wedding played out successfully and my life returned to a kind of normalcy, I was still trying to understand, how did I get so sick planning for a wedding?

After having great success with only one six-week workshop.  I enrolled in Peeka Trenkle's Green Medicine Training {4 Months}, Ecological Herbalism {6 Months}, and Practical Homeopathy {9 Months} at the New York Open Center.  For the next three years, I immersed myself into learning everything I could about herbs and healing.

Now, with over eight years under my belt, I have been able to avoid antibiotics and NSAIDS since beginning my studies. I've also learned the great stress I experienced with planning the wedding, caused my nervous system to go crazy and disrupted my digestion.  Relieving stress can answer many of our ailments.

Adaptogens

After birthing my twins naturally, I experienced a lengthy postpartum depression.  When I turned to my herbs and homeopathy, nothing was working.  I eventually found Dr. Aviva Romm's Women's Health Specialist course and have not been happier.

Dr. Aviva Romm helped me connect how the overuse of antibiotics in my childhood and a too narrow diet; led to chronic sinus infections, bloating and skin rashes. Also, the monthly Advil {I use to take as a young adult for cramps} could have created my constant abdominal pain and constipation.  Antibiotics, advil, and stress disrupts our microbiome and leads to food intolerance, where we can barely eat anything!

The planning of a big wedding and the birthing of twins {along with opening a business!} was also two different events that caused an enormous amount of stress and overload on my body.  By calming my nervous system with adaptogens, I was able to heal.

It’s easy to take a narrow view and pop a pill, slap on some cream, but if you look deeper, you will realize if you change your diet and your medications, you will alleviate symptoms that you may not think are related, even ones that you might you have experienced your whole life.

We are so accustomed to going to the doctor when we have an infection or illness and saying, “How can you fix this?” Instead of asking, “How can I heal myself?” in a changed lifestyle, in a more holistic way. You actually can live and thrive by the words,

“Let they food be they medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.”

In each health consultation, I address diet and stress first.  Sometimes this is all you need to jumpstart your healing.  For more information on health consultations, go to:
