Why are you awake when everyone else is sleeping?
By the end of this video, you'll have my tried and true herbal remedies to stop postpartum insomnia so you can sleep like a baby. Make sure you subscribe to my channel and hit the bell to be notified of my new videos each Tuesday. Hundreds of women integrate natural remedies into their diet to reduce medications, and you can learn more on my website, taragregorio.com. Now it's your turn to get a good night's sleep. Let's dive in.
Sleep Deprivation: If your sleep has been disrupted since you've had your child, your circadian rhythms are off. This can be a significant factor. Raising twins, I didn't sleep for two full years as my sleep was interrupted every single night.
Hormones: Your hormones are adjusting after having a child and may affect you for years to come. Stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes can have a cascade effect on your adrenal glands. We want to restore your adrenal health, dive into your diet, avoid a sugar roller coaster, and help you get back to sleep faster.
Treatment for Postpartum Insomnia
1. Reduce Caffeine:
Cut out caffeine as much as possible, including chocolate. Lack of sleep can lead to a dependence on coffee and sugar in the morning, and wine at night, creating a sugar roller coaster and adrenal fatigue.
Start the day with hot water and lemon or green tea, and limit coffee to one cup. Incorporate herbal teas like stinging nettles and milky oat tops to nourish your adrenals and soothe your body for a good night's sleep.
2. Go to Bed:
Prioritize sleep. Avoid staying up late for quiet time, Netflix, or spending time with your spouse. Insomnia can lead to anxiety and depression, so restoring your sleep is crucial.
3. Herbal Tincture:
Take a tincture in the middle of the night. Herbal tinctures are an easy way to take herbal medicine. Ingredients will vary if you’re breastfeeding or not. Valerian, kava kava, motherwort, lavender, and lemon balm are good options if you're not breastfeeding.
If your adrenals are severely depleted, the tincture may not work. Nourish your adrenals with stinging nettles, long baths with magnesium, adequate sleep, oiling your body, and a healthy diet.
4. Homeopathy:
Homeopathy can be a favorite natural remedy. If you drink too much coffee and feel tired and wired, Coffea 30c can help. For waking up at 3 a.m. feeling nauseous, Nux Vomica is the remedy. Consult with a homeopath or herbalist to find the right remedy for your symptoms.
5. Supplements:
During the postpartum period, taking supplements like magnesium, iron, vitamin D, and omega-3s is essential. Magnesium helps with sleep and reduces constipation. Iron and vitamin D are crucial, especially in winter, and omega-3s reduce inflammation.
