Postnatal Anxiety; 7 Steps to Stop a Postpartum Panic Attack

Postnatal Anxiety

Understanding Panic Attacks

  • Identify the Cause:

  • Why are you having panic attacks?

  • What is happening in your life?

  • Are you sleeping well?

  • Is your thyroid off?

  • Did you just have a baby?

  • Are you in menopause? How is your diet? Are you drinking a lot of alcohol or caffeine? Consider what might be creating this panic and anxiety. Keep in mind that your night is a reflection of your day. Are you taking time for yourself or giving to everyone else all day long?

How to stop severe panic attacks

Preventing Panic Attacks Without Medication

  1. Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Stop drinking alcohol as it disrupts your sleep and can increase anxiety. Limit caffeine to one cup in the morning or eliminate it. Replace your coffee with caffeine-free herbal teas.

  2. Check Gut Health: Functional medicine doctors often check for gut health issues like dysbiosis or inflammation caused by diet, pregnancy, antibiotics, or medications. Foods like dairy or gluten can contribute to anxiety and panic attacks. Addressing gut health can reduce panic attacks.

  3. Manage Worries: Anxiety is often worrying about the future, while depression is worrying about the past. Write down your worries in a journal, particularly in the evening before bed and in the morning. A worry journal can help you manage anxiety.

  4. Thyroid Health: Have your thyroid checked. Postpartum thyroid issues can cause anxiety and panic attacks. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can contribute to anxiety, so it's important to know if your thyroid is causing your symptoms.

Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

  1. Adaptogens: My favorite herbs for anxiety are adaptogens, particularly ashwagandha. It helps modulate stress without overstimulation. Ginseng can be helpful if you lack energy, but it may need to be used cautiously.

  2. Nervines: Herbs that help soothe anxiety include motherwort, milky oat tops, lemon balm, and chamomile. Choose herbs based on your specific needs, such as whether you are breastfeeding or in menopause.
