Postpartum Anxiety and Depression Relief: Diet Tricks That Actually Work

Postpartum Anxiety Diet

Does Your Diet Really Matter for Postpartum Anxiety?

I remember when I had twins, I ate whatever was put in front of me because there was simply no time to think about food. As they grew, I started eating their chicken nuggets and ice cream, and before I knew it, we were going out for ice cream every week.

So, does your diet really matter?

Absolutely! It's time to start paying attention to what you're putting into your body because what you eat directly affects your mood, body pain, and digestion. All of these factors play a crucial role in healing anxiety naturally.

If you're a mom feeling overwhelmed with postpartum anxiety and want to heal naturally, increase your energy, sleep better, and reduce body pain and digestive issues, make sure to grab the Postpartum Anxiety Roadmap. And if you're serious about healing without medications, schedule a free call with me. I’d love to share how I can support you.

The Connection Between Diet and Anxiety

Your diet and anxiety are closely linked through the autonomic nervous system. When your digestion improves, your mood lifts, and anxiety symptoms can start to fade. I know it might seem impossible, especially if you're struggling right now, but healing is possible.

Many moms ask, "How long does postpartum anxiety last?" The truth is, it can persist indefinitely if you don’t address gut health, nervous system regulation, and overall body healing.

3 Ways to Use Nutrition to Support Postpartum Anxiety

1. Pay Attention to What You Drink

What are you drinking every day?

Many moms wake up and have a cup of coffee... and then another... and another. If you’re consuming two to three cups of coffee daily, consider reducing your intake and replacing it with nourishing teas instead.

One of my favorite blends is The One Daily Tea Blend, which includes stinging nettles and milky oat tops, both safe for breastfeeding. These botanicals are rich in vitamins, minerals, and a small amount of iron. Nettles also help balance blood sugar levels, which is essential for mood stability.

If you’re reaching for alcohol in the evenings to unwind, take note of how it affects your sleep. Alcohol raises estrogen levels, disrupts sleep, and can increase anxiety symptoms. Try replacing it with herbal teas or other calming alternatives to better support your nervous system.

2. Increase Your Protein Intake

Eating more protein helps regulate blood sugar levels and reduces sugar cravings, which can be crucial for stabilizing your mood.

If you’ve been avoiding protein due to digestive issues, I have tips to help you digest it more easily. Many of my clients who are vegan or vegetarian add just one or two eggs a day and notice a significant improvement in their energy and mood.

High-quality protein sources, such as lamb over chicken, can provide essential amino acids that support brain health and emotional stability. If digestion is an issue, try incorporating ginger with your protein or using digestive enzymes.

3. Reduce or Eliminate Alcohol

If you're experiencing postpartum insomnia, heart palpitations, or increased anxiety, alcohol could be a contributing factor. Even occasional alcohol consumption can disrupt hormone levels, particularly progesterone, which is essential for restful sleep.

Alcohol also affects liver function, which plays a critical role in hormone balance postpartum. If you notice that drinking worsens your symptoms, consider removing it at least temporarily to support your healing.

Start Nourishing Your Body Today

The first step to healing is looking at what you’re consuming daily. Making small changes like switching out just one food or drink can have a huge impact on your mood and overall well-being.
