The One Hormone Causing Postpartum Insomnia
Postpartum Insomnia
Wondering why you have insomnia?
In the video above, I describe why we struggle with insomnia and how we can heal it by addressing our hormone imbalance.
Signs of Low Progesterone
Symptoms like heavy periods, blood clots, insomnia, anxiety, bloating, and constipation can indicate low progesterone. This hormone imbalance is common postpartum (for up to 2+ years) and during perimenopause.
Hormone Testing
The Dutch Hormone Test ($300) measures progesterone, estrogen, and cortisol, but it may not be necessary if you’re breastfeeding or less than two years postpartum.
Use symptom checklists instead to identify patterns and remedies.

Stress Management
High cortisol disrupts hormones. Use adaptogens and nervines to manage stress and improve sleep. Sleep is crucial for hormone balance and overall well-being.
Key Supplements
Vitamin B6: Supports progesterone, but take it as part of a B-complex or multivitamin.
Vitamin D + K2: Boost levels to 50 ng/mL to alleviate symptoms like insomnia and depression.
Selenium & Iodine: Found in Brazil nuts, these support thyroid health,- which impacts progesterone levels.
Dietary Support
Prioritize high-quality animal proteins, whole grains, and fiber (50g/day) to improve elimination and reduce estrogen dominance.
Limit processed foods, especially those with folic acid, which may affect individuals with the MTHFR gene mutation.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Balance blood sugar with consistent meals.
Avoid over-exercising; prioritize gentle activities like yoga and walking, especially if dealing with hyperthyroidism.
Progesterone Support
Consider a wild yam cream containing progesterone applied from days 14–28 of your cycle. Use caution when breastfeeding.
If blood clots are severe, consult a naturopath for a higher-quality compounded cream.
Liver Health
Support your liver with castor oil packs, milk thistle, or TUDCA supplements to help process excess estrogen.
