Now, let’s dive into the five mistakes we make when struggling with postpartum insomnia. I’ve made all of these mistakes, so don’t worry. I’m here to share them with you so you don’t have to repeat them.

Postpartum Insomnia Reason and Effect

1. Not Recognizing Trauma

The first mistake is not realizing we’ve experienced trauma. Trauma isn’t always a single, obvious event like losing a loved one. It can be something that happens too quickly or intensely for your nervous system to handle. If you find yourself repeatedly triggered or overwhelmed, it might be due to unresolved trauma. Writing, drawing, dancing, or other forms of artistic expression can help release this trauma from your body.

2. Ignoring Nervous System Regulation

Another mistake is not understanding how to regulate your nervous system. Post-trauma, we often stay in a constant state of fight or flight, which makes it hard to relax and heal. Learning tools and techniques to calm your nervous system, such as deep breathing exercises or nature gazing, can help. Regular practice is key, and understanding your menstrual cycle can provide insights into patterns of insomnia related to hormonal changes.

3. Not Knowing What to Take

We often try various remedies like CBD gummies, melatonin, or herbal supplements without a clear understanding of what will work for us. It’s essential to have a structured approach to healing, which includes diet, supplements, nervous system regulation, herbal remedies, and gut healing. Finding a clear roadmap can make a significant difference.

4. Not Seeking the Right Help

We may struggle to find the right help, as not everyone understands postpartum struggles. I’ve been through trauma and long-term health issues, so I understand the complexities. Consider what each person you’ve consulted has taught you and seek out individuals who can address the specific aspects of your healing journey.

5. Using the Wrong SSRIs

  • Finally, using the wrong SSRIs can be problematic, especially if you have the MTHFR gene, which affects how you metabolize certain medications. If SSRIs aren’t working for you, it may be due to your genetic makeup.
