Elderberry Syrup For Kids

Elderberry Syrup - What is it Good for?

By now, you’ve probably heard of elderberry syrup. Great to reduce cold and flu symptoms as it’s filled with Vitamin C.

It’s also a bit pricey.

By making it at home, you’re teaching your children how to care for their health and saving a little bit of money.

How do you make it?

Here’s my favorite recipe.

First, you’ll need to buy some ingredients. I purchase from mountain rose herbs or gather the elderberries in the summer and dry them myself.

Ingredients:

1 cup Elderberries, dried black

• 2 tbsp Ginger, fresh or dried root {optionl, kids may not like this}

• 1 cup Honey or maple syrup, raw {use maple syrup for kids under 1 year of age}

Baking & Spices

• 1 tsp Cinnamon, powder

Liquids

• 4 cups Water

Instructions:

  • Pour the water and roots into a saucepan on the stove

  • Bring to a boil and then simmer UNCOVERED until it reduces by half {2 cups}

  • Strain

  • Add honey or maple syrup

  • Stir and let cool

  • Store in the refrigerator for about 5 days

  • Check to see if there is any mold if you store longer

  • Consider adding 1 tsp. of alcohol to preserve it.

**Please note: Do not use honey with children under one year of age. You can substitute maple syrup.
