Elderberry Syrup For Kids
Ready to learn a quick way to boost your child’s immunity this winter?
Elderberry syrup is one of our favorite recipes to make to stay healthy all winter long.
The color of elderberries is a bright wine color when you make this, so be careful that it doesn’t stain your countertop!
Elderberry syrup benefits
Filled with Vitamin C, it’s great for reducing cold and flu symptoms
A chronic cough
If your kids are always sick
It’s also a bit pricey.
By making it at home, you’re teaching your children how to care for their health and saving a little bit of money.
How do you make it?
Here’s my favorite recipe.
First, you’ll need to buy some ingredients.
I purchase from Mountain Rose Herbs or gather the elderberries in the summer and dry them myself.
Elderberry Syrup Ingredients:
• 1 cup Elderberries, dried black
• 2 tbsp Ginger, fresh or dried root {optionl, kids may not like this}
• 1 cup Honey or maple syrup, raw {use maple syrup for kids under 1 year of age}
Baking & Spices
• 1 tsp Cinnamon, powder
Liquids
• 4 cups Water
Instructions:
Pour the water and roots into a saucepan on the stove
Bring to a boil and then simmer UNCOVERED until it reduces by half {2 cups}
Strain
Add honey or maple syrup
Stir and let cool
Store in the refrigerator for about 5 days
Check to see if there is any mold if you store it longer
Consider adding 1 tsp. of alcohol to preserve it.
**Please note: Do not use honey with children under one year of age. You can substitute maple syrup.
Where can you purchase botanicals?
Ginger root, look for cut and sifted - like this one {Skip this step if your kids are young or don't like spicy foods}
I store the syrup in a mason jar in the refrigerator for 5 days
Conclusion
Making herbal remedies at home is a beautiful way to teach your children how to care for their health.
